Nitrogen tolerance

Nitrogen tolerance is the engineered trait that allowed the alien microbe Taumoeba to survive in the atmospheres of Venus and Threeworld, making it the key to saving both Earth and Erid from the Astrophage infestation. Through an accelerated evolutionary breeding program, Ryland Grace and Rocky forced successive generations of Taumoeba to adapt to increasing concentrations of nitrogen, ultimately producing a strain that could thrive in the 3.5% nitrogen atmosphere of Venus and the 8% nitrogen atmosphere of Threeworld. However, the process had an unintended side effect: the nitrogen-resistant Taumoeba also evolved the ability to migrate through xenonite, the Eridians' super-strong hull material, which led to the contamination of the Hail Mary's fuel supply and the catastrophic failure of the Blip-A's engines.

The Problem of Nitrogen

After Grace and Rocky discovered that Taumoeba, a natural predator of Astrophage, could not survive in the atmospheres of Venus or Threeworld, they identified the specific toxin: elemental nitrogen (N₂). Grace's experiments showed that Taumoeba died within seconds when exposed to nitrogen, even at the low concentrations found in Venus's upper atmosphere (3.5%) or Threeworld's (8%). This was deeply puzzling because nitrogen is harmless to both Earth life and Eridian life, and all three biospheres were believed to share a common ancestor through panspermia. The solution, as Grace realized, was not to change the planets' atmospheres but to change the Taumoeba itself through directed evolution.

The Breeding Program

Grace and Rocky designed an accelerated evolutionary process modeled on the way antibiotics lose effectiveness over time. The principle was simple: create an environment that was barely deadly to Taumoeba, breed the survivors, then increase the nitrogen concentration and repeat. Rocky built ten xenonite breeder tanks with precise gas injection systems, allowing Grace to control nitrogen content to within one part per million. Each tank received a different nitrogen percentage, with increments of 0.05% between them. The heartiest survivors from each generation became the champions that moved to the next round. Over many generations, the Taumoeba's nitrogen tolerance steadily increased, tracked by the strain numbers: Taumoeba-06 could handle 0.6% nitrogen, Taumoeba-35 reached 3.5% (the Venus threshold), and finally Taumoeba-80 achieved 8% (the Threeworld threshold). Grace later pushed further to Taumoeba-82.5 for an extra safety margin.

The Unintended Consequence

The breeding program succeeded beyond expectations, but evolution does not work on a single trait in isolation. The Taumoeba were being bred in xenonite tanks, and when the nitrogen concentration became lethal, the only way for individual cells to survive was to hide inside the xenonite walls themselves, where the nitrogen could not reach them. Over generations, this selected for Taumoeba that could actively work their way through xenonite's molecular structure. Grace discovered this when his entire fuel supply became contaminated: the Taumoeba had escaped their xenonite breeder tanks, migrated through the ship's xenonite tunnels, and entered the fuel lines. The same contamination struck Rocky's ship, the Blip-A, whose critical bulkheads and fuel tanks were all made of xenonite. The Blip-A's engines failed completely, leaving Rocky adrift and derelict at the edge of the Tau Ceti system.

Consequences and Resolution

The nitrogen tolerance program ultimately saved two worlds but nearly cost Rocky his life. Grace sent four beetle probes to Earth, each carrying a mini-farm of Taumoeba-82.5 sealed in Eridian steel (which the Taumoeba could not penetrate), along with instructions for deploying them on Venus. He then turned the Hail Mary around to rescue Rocky, using the ship's spin drives as a makeshift radar to locate the drifting Blip-A. The Taumoeba contamination of the Blip-A's fuel, while catastrophic, also provided an unexpected benefit: the fuel bays now contained twenty-two million kilograms of Taumoeba biomass, which Grace discovered he could eat. This solved his own food shortage and allowed him to survive on Erid long enough for the Eridians to develop synthetic nutrition. Years later, news reached Erid that Sol had returned to full brightness, confirming that the Taumoeba had successfully eliminated the Astrophage infestation on Venus and saved Earth.
